Relative Home Systems Overcomes Smart Home Challenges

In a recent study conducted by Microsoft, researchers found three barriers that must be addressed before wider adoption of smart home technology can occur. While the majority of households surveyed reported mostly positive experiences with home automation, participants highlighted three challenges including linking disparate systems, poor manageability, and high cost of ownership. The team of experts at Relative Home Systems has been working to address these challenges in each of the automation projects it convenes. Challenge #1: Linking Disparate Systems

With so many smart devices and electronics within a single home, it can become challenging for the homeowner to get the flawless integration they desire. Retrofitting a home with the proper technology requires expertise in smart technology, programming, and networking.

Each project we tackle has its own unique set of challenges and demands, but this is where we excel. Whether you choose to automate a single room in your home or outfit the entire house, our team will design a plan, select the right technology and configure it in a manner that meets you and your family’s needs. Want to Surprise Your Family with the Ultimate Gift?

Want to Surprise Your Family with the Ultimate Gift?

What’s the best Christmas gift you’ve ever received? What about the best gift you’ve ever given? Exotic vacations, high-end appliances, and new cars are just a few gifts that come to mind.  And we acknowledge it’s a little odd to be talking winter holidays in April, but we couldn’t resist telling you about one of the greatest gift-giving projects that we’ve been a part of. A husband approached us expressing his desire to surprise his wife and two kids with a home theater system in time for Christmas. Pretty exciting, right? We thought so too. In this blog we’ll tell you one of our favorite gift-giving stories so that whether you’re in Sugar Land or Memorial, TX you can start imagining what you’ll give during the holidays and throughout the year.

The project started with a storage room full of stuff that we were able to successfully transform into a home theater system. We did everything in the room from electrical work and painting, to the seating and audiovisual components. The homeowner gave us free reign to design the theater and add in our favorite pieces of technology. First, we drew out the room and presented our concept to the client. The team began planning for the project a month in advance of the December 25th holiday.

The entire install took around three weeks to complete and was one of our more challenging projects since some of the aspects of the room could not be changed. For example, since the room already contained columns we decided to incorporate those into the design. The room also had a window along the back wall, so we added a motorized drape to cover it when the theater is movie mode.

The room includes a variety of great technology including a Stewart screen and Runco projector with a Triad speaker system. We wanted to give the family access to great content too and installed a Kaleidescape movie server, along with a Blu-ray player. But we didn’t stop there. The entire system is controlled using an iPad and a Crestron remote. We integrated the audiovisual components along with HVAC and lighting, giving the family complete control from any seat in the room.

Keeping the project a secret was also a bit of challenge. The homeowner told his family the room was off limits until Christmas and while they knew something was going on, they didn’t quite know what. The kids and the wife were quite surprised and had never imagined they were getting their very own home theater.

Want a real theater experience in your home like this one we did for Christmas? We’ll create a system tailored to your technology preferences and interior design tastes. So sit back, grab a bowl of popcorn and let us get to work. Contact us to learn more.
